Antminer X3 & Monero Hard Fork Timeline

We posted a guide in late March 2018 explaining what the Antminer X3 was, and went through why it was a very high-risk ASIC miner to buy. We're now approaching the 6th April 2018, the date when the X3 profitability will see a significant decrease.

This guide will go through the timeline of events leading to this, and why by May 2018 most coins based on Cryptonight will have become ASIC-resistant.

Firstly, see our previous guide if you haven't read it yet on what the Antminer X3 is, what Cryptonight is, the various hard-forks around Monero, etc.

Timeline of Past Antminer X3-related events

March 8th 2018

  • Monero announces they're going to hard-fork on the 28th March to become ASIC resistant (because of rumours that Cryptonight ASICs are about to be released).
  • Because Monero will become ASIC resistant, many other coins using the same mining algorithm as Monero (Cryptonight) now need to decide if they're going to also become ASIC resistant.

March 16th 2018

  • The PinIdea RR-200 Cryptonight ASIC miner is released.
  • Many people speculate that manufacturers have been mining with these ASICs already, and are selling them to the public now to avoid losses after ASIC resistant hard-forks on Cryptonight-based coins.

March 29th 2018

  • An "anonymous team of crypto enthusiasts" has announced that they plan to keep the original Monero chain going after the hard-fork on the 6th April. This means on the 6th April, you'll get a new coin called 'XMO', and this new coin will retain Monero's current proof-of-work algorithm (and so support Cryptonight ASIC miners). Anyone holding Monero in a supported wallet during the fork will receive both coins afterwards. We've also seen mention of Monero0 on Reddit - we're unsure if this is the same group, but this Reddit thread has an interesting discussion on if this is a good or bad thing.

April 2nd 2018

  • Cryptonight-based Sumocoin becomes ASIC resistant (their new ASIC-resistant hashing algorithm is called 'Cryptonight-Heavy').
  • A Reddit user questions Bitmain's sales tactics for the Antminer X3.

Timeline of Future Antminer X3-related events

April 5th 2018

April 6th 2018

  • Monero hard-fork will take place, Cryptonight ASICs will likely no longer be able to mine Monero efficiently.
  • Monero hashrate and difficulty will likely drop significantly, potentially allowing CPU/GPU Monero mining to be much more profitable.

April 16th 2018

April 30th 2018

  • MoneroV (XMV) hard-fork will take place. This is unrelated to the April 6th hard-fork, and many people have claimed this is a scam/has security risks. We cover this in an earlier guide.
